Start Your Journey

Comfortable Care Starts With Understanding

If you experience fear or anxiety at the thought of visiting the dentist, you’re not alone. Millions of patients put off essential dental care due to dental phobia or discomfort with treatment. At OB1 Dental, we understand those concerns—and we offer safe, gentle sedation options to help you feel completely at ease.

Your Options for a More Relaxed Visit

We offer three types of conscious sedation based on your needs and health history:

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild sedative inhaled through a small mask. Fast-acting, easy to control, and wears off quickly after the procedure.
  • Oral Sedation: A prescribed pill taken before your visit to create a calm, drowsy state. You remain awake, but less aware of time or discomfort.
  • IV Sedation: Ideal for complex procedures or high anxiety, this method provides a deeper level of relaxation, administered and monitored safely throughout your treatment.

Who Benefits from Sedation?

Sedation dentistry is an excellent solution for those with severe dental anxiety, strong gag reflexes, sensitive teeth, or special medical or cognitive conditions. It’s also ideal when multiple treatments need to be completed in a single visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Considering sedation dentistry? Explore the most common questions our patients ask before getting started.

What is the difference between local anesthesia and dental sedation?

Local anesthesia involves an injection directly into or close to the area where a procedure is being performed. While it eliminates any sensation of pain in the targeted area, it does not affect your state of mind or level of anxiety. When a patient receives sedation, additional medications to ease anxiety and promote relaxation are employed in advance of local anesthesia. In this way, both the stress and discomfort associated with a procedure are eliminated. Sedation can be administered in a variety of forms based upon patient needs and the recommendations of the dentist or dental anesthesiologist.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes. Sedation methods are carefully administered and monitored by trained professionals with your safety as the top priority.

Will I be asleep during sedation?

Not necessarily. Most dental sedation is “conscious sedation,” meaning you’re deeply relaxed but still responsive to cues.

How long does it take for sedation to wear off?

It depends on the type of sedation used. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes, while oral and IV sedation may take several hours. You'll need someone to drive you home after oral or IV sedation.

Can I eat before my sedation appointment?

For nitrous oxide, you can usually eat a light meal beforehand. However, for oral or IV sedation, you may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for several hours prior. We’ll provide specific instructions based on your treatment plan.
